Saturn L(IR)RGB 11th Oct 2022
About this image
First decent Saturn image of the year, L(IR)RGB using 642nm filter with mono ASI174mm for luminance and ASI482MC for colour. Hints of Encke's division at ansae

Excellent result Martin. I see that you used the Astronomik 642nm IR filter, so is that the one that is a wider bandwidth, so something of an R-IR filter? I've been reading about it on their website, but not seen many images from it where used as a luminance. Their website has some with it used together with with a mono camera and GB filters for an R-IRGB result. I already have their 742nm Pro Planet IR filter, but not used that with the color camera yet, so would be really interested to have your opinion on the IR642nm filter before I hit the buy button.
Many thanks, Geof
Hi Geoff,
I think the 642nm is an excellent R/IR planetary filter. It gives a higher response in cameras than the 742nm and gives signficantly smaller diffraction features. Have lots of IR images on my website showing the benefit in resolution over RGB due to the improved seeing it gives. For example see https://skyinspector.co.uk/jupiter/
My advice - BUY
Thanks Martin, that's what I wanted to hear. Have you tried it with the 482MC? My 462MC is strong in the IR range, so I'd probably use it with that rather than swapping to the 290MM.
Cheers, Geof
Hi Geoff,
Haven't used that filter with any colour camera. Generally better to use these IR filters with a mono camera if available. I've only used a methane filter with my ASI462MC but only because I don't have a mono camera with the great IR sensitivity of the 462 and at those longer IR wavelengths the camera is essentially mono. At shorter wavelengths not sure the 462 is so good. Chistophe Pellier has a lot to say about this here: https://www.planetary-astronomy-and-imaging.com/en/imx462-less-resolved-before-750nm/
Cheers, Martin
Hi Martin, sorry for my tardy reply; I've been travelling the past week, so as well as missing the double moon transit I didn't see you comment until today. Thanks for the link to CP's review of the IR response of the 462MC, which I'd already seen and in part is why I was interested to know if you'd tried the BP642 filter with your 482MC camera. I already have the IR742 set up for use with the 290MM in a different FW, so maybe I should use that with the 462MC camera and get a BP462 filter to use with the 290MM..., decisions, decisions.....
