About this image

This unusual ring galaxy in Cetus was discovered by American astronomer Francis Leavenworth in 1886. It is probably the product of a galaxy merger.

This COAST image shows a faint half-moon shape, with a similar shaped void inside, cradling a bright nucleus, with some brighter spots in the lower part of the half-moon. A number of other galaxies can also be seen in the image.

Distance c.550million ly. Apparent size 1.0' x 0.9'. Diameter c.160,000ly. Apparent mag. 13.5.
