About this image
A beautiful and unexpected display of the aurora borealis - my first time seeing proper pillars and curtains, rather than a distant 'is-that-haze-slightly-green?' glow. For a few minutes around 23:30 it filled the northern sky up to about 60 or 70 degrees, and I couldn't fit it all in my camera's field of view. When the display was at its best, three bright pillars suddenly rippled into formation almost directly due north, stretching high into the sky like pink searchlights; after a few majestic seconds they had vanished. I didn't get a photo of them though, since I was too busy jumping into the air in excitement.
