About this image

The "image" is a display of observed paths (dashed lines), one path from each observer (listed).  Overlayed is the position of the asteroid fitted into one of the paths. Only Simon Kidd (chord 1) observed an occultation.  His light curve appears bottom right (with thanks for sharing his data).  The star field image was recorded by myself, about 20min before the occultation using a 5 sec exposure (stack of 10).  The asteroid was magnitude 17.2, and the star 11.4.

To the observer, the occulted star disappeared from the monitor screen for about 1 second, short and dramatic.

Of interest is chord 4, where the observer recorded a "miss".  This effectively constrains the position of the asteroid to a few milli-arc seconds (mas).  The result is preliminary using Occult4.  Timings were made by members of the Asteroid and Remote Planets Section (ARPS) using their "back yard" telescopes.

A good distribution of observers (like this) and clear weather over a wide area is needed to make these collaborative observations. We were fortunate this time !
