Multiple outbursts between November 21 and November 24
We have seen at least 5 separate eruptions take place in recent days. Below is a close-up of the lightcurve. Having 51 observing runs in 11 days helps to track changes. The last 3 days has seen a smooth decline in brightness of the inner coma. Has the nucleus turned off its eruptions for the next week or two?
29P’s Lightcurve for the current apparition, 2024‒2025
We have witnessed a multi-eruption outburst during November 2.1 ‒ 3.9, the brightest since 2021. Since then a mini-outburst has been registered that occurred on November 17 followed by another intense eruption on November 21, which was first detected thanks to a COMET CHASERS image scheduled by Maria Eleftheriou. Pepe Manteca had taken an image from Chile using the iTelescope T72 instrument that showed the object entirely quiescent about 8 hours earlier. We have obtained multifilter images within about 6 hours of the eruption (intensity = 84 nucleus-equivalents).

Mark Phillips catches start of strong outburst at 2024 03 24.847 ± 0.001 16.75R => 13.70R
Observations listed below. Unusual fairly symmetrical outburst coma and a quick fade as shown in the above plot.

Excellent coverage of this 1.8-magnitude, 9.3 nucleus-equivalent intensity outburst.
Mini-outburst on 2024 February 25
Detected by Denis Buczynski and in images by Ben Wooding of St Mary’s School, Bridgend, Wales, this is the weakest outburst in 4 months of observations.
Outburst (16.30R => 14.65R) on February 12.48 ± 0.23 discovered by Wayne Hawley
Observed by Wayne early this evening from Fiddington, Somerset, UK. Thanks Wayne for phoning to alert everyone. It might have been on the rise in which case other observers could have followed its progress. Observations towards end of this page.
Mini-outburst on 2024 February 05
Twenty days after its last eruption, Denis Buczynski discovered the latest mini-outburst which weighs in at an intensity of 3.0 nucleus-equivalents. The definition of a mini-outburst is 4.0 n.-e. or less in intensity, which equates to about an amplitude of 1.0 mag from quiescence.
Outburst (16.3R => 14.1R) on January 16.81 ± 0.03 discovered by Denis Buczynski
Photometry thanks to Denis starts at 14.55R and peaks at 14.10R just 4 hours later. Denis probably caught it 90 minutes after the start of outburst. See photometry listed below.
The average gap in time between the last 11 events has been 11 days! Clearly enhanced activity corresponding with the most active season on the nucleus. We have an accurate fix on the start thanks to Pieter-Jan Dekelver who found it quiescent 2.6 hours before Denis’ first frame. Maybe others have data during the intervening time?
Five outbursts following strongest outburst since August 16 !
The intensity of these five eruptions, which began on December 08 were 42, 20, 52, 20, and 5 nucleus-equivalents, i.e. all in the ‘strong’ category.

To confirm these requires using 2.0-m images and examining photometry in smaller photometric apertures ….
Three further mini-outbursts on Oct 19, Oct 26 and Oct 30
The October 19 event became apparent after many excellent observations over subsequent days.
First mini-outburst of the current apparition
We have had to wait 41 days for the next outburst, which is a weak one amounting to 2.7 nucleus-equivalents, on 2023 09 26.64 ± 0.37. The previous event generated 98 nucleus-equivalents of ejecta. See data below.
Second stronger outburst 7.5 days after first detected
Jean-François has imaged a second outburst of double the intensity of the first, which happened 7.5 ± 1.5 days earlier. N.B. Recently discovered Comet C/2023 P1 (Nishimura) will pass 9 arcmin south of 29P on 2023 August 27.43,
Start of the 2023-24 apparition
Jean-François Soulier has detected a new strong outburst of 29P just 54.0 days after the previous MISSION 29P observation.
It looks like the outburst took place at a solar elongation of just 20° and has reached 13th magnitude. The outburst was detected at a record distance from Earth, i.e. 7.07 au. We have also had confirmation of the fading outburst from Matt Dawson observing from southern Italy. Observations are shown below with outburst intensity expressed in absolute units of nucleus-equivalents (n.-e.):

This apparition we have had 20 mini-outbursts during the 11 months’ coverage, the first was detected by Jean-François Soulier on 2022 Jul 26, the last by Soulier and Eric Watkins on 2023 May 26.
