V347 Aurigae is a pre-main sequence variable star lying within a small, isolated and largely starless molecular cloud known as Lynd’s Dark Nebula (LDN) 1438. To the south and south-east of the star, a faintly luminous curved edge of a reflection nebula can be seen at approximately 10.5 arc seconds distance. The extent and brightness of the nebula change in line with changes as the star’s brightness varies.
Normally, V347 Aurigae is around magnitude 14.5, but on occasions it has experienced an outburst to brighter than 12th magnitude. Such outbursts greatly enhance the reflection nebula as shown in the image below.

BAA Deep Sky Section Note #1 (2022) reported amateur observations that support the professional research conclusion that the brightness fluctuations of the reflection nebula are immediately correlated with the star’s variability. However, more data would be welcome so it is still useful to monitor any changes in the reflection nebula’s appearance in case there are also apparent changes to the nebula’s extent and brightness.
