The 2017 Aug 21 eclipse DVD is now available from the BAA shop and it should be on sale at Astrofest. It is a great memory of a very widely seen eclipse.
Many thanks to Roger Perry who edited it and to all of the people who provided material.
Missed the DVD at Astrofest, I’ll look out for it at Winchester.
Here’s my video of totality through 70mm refractor in a field near Salem, Oregon. Used 550D, as you can see a mod’d camera, Univ retrospect a mistake but I wanted some nice red prominences. Everything else turned out red as well.
Richard Fleet can be heard on audio as well as “Total Eclipse of the Heart'” blaring out on someone’s car stereo.
Steve – I remember driving back from the eclipse and they were playing “eclipse related” tracks in rotation on most of the Nebraska FM stations we could find. TEotH was one, You’re So Vain was another. Then the eclipse connection got really weak.
I bet they didn’t play “Total eclipse” from Handel’s Samson. Mind you, it is an aria after the strongman had been blinded, so just as well.
Seems like yesterday that I was in a battered old Hawaii jeep (an exotic vehicle apparently) on cloudy Hawaii with Nick James and Richard Fleet…… We were clouded out (unfortunately our tour guide was NOT John Mason…so we used a Jeep to give ourselves a chance…..) Distinctly remember sitting in the Jeep with the local radio playing Cat Stevens ‘Moonshadow’.

I suspect that would be a bit high-brow for most US commercial FM stations and one wouldn’t want to condone putting someone’s eyes out just because they didn’t cut their hair.
So, on eclipse day you were in a jeep too Martin. We were in the back of a jeep driven by the operator of the 88″. Woke to pouring rain and no hope, but the guy – who could have gone to the top of Mauna Kea (being observatory staff and able to get past the police cordon) if he hadnt stuck with us – went to the saddle road and waited.
Managed to see it through fog – so stuff all corona apart from prominences but binoculars showed the structure in the inner corona despite the fog. No Cat Stevens (happily) but there was a burst of Robert Plant’s Manic Nirvana before we left base in Hilo that morning.
