I suspect these items will be out of the price range of most / all BAA members, but I spotted on Facebook that Owen Gingerich’s personal library is going up for auction by Christie’s, January 14-28, 2025.

Owen Gingerich was a prolific writer on the history of astronomy and a preeminent expert on Copernicus and Kepler at Harvard, who died in 2023 at the age of 93.

I would never have guessed that he owned such an extensive and valuable personal collection, but the auction includes over 200 items including works of Copernicus, Tycho Brahe, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton.

The link to the auction is here: https://onlineonly.christies.com/s/fine-printed-books-manuscripts-including-americana/lots/3466?page=1&sc_lang=en&sortby=LotNumber&themes=The+Astronomical+Library+of+Owen+Gingerich

Impressive. There are several there which I would love to own, having only reproductions so far. Principia and Mechanism of the Heavens, in particular.

Somerville’s work is still well worth studying despite having been published just shy of 200 years ago.
