As mentioned in the March Deep Sky Update, I’ve taken on the Variable Nebula coordinator role and am making an appeal for copies of any images members have taken of Hind’s Variable Nebula (NGC1555) in 2015 or earlier. The reason for this is to investigate a suspicion that a regularly observed narrow shadow across the nebula has only been seen since 2015. If you do have such images and are happy to copy them to me please send them to me at vne@britastro.org
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Richard,

Will have a look at the gallery and see if I have any images older that those I have already placed on it. 3 at least I suspect, probably going back to mid 90s. Of course, people didn’t usually stack more than 20 or 30 images then (I had to write my own code to do it) – and Pentiums weren’t exactly nippy. Bill Gates declaration that “640kB should be enough for anyone” was already a joke.

    Will look this evening.

    Grant

    EDIT: 1997, 2007, 2017, 2018,2019 now in the gallery…

Thanks Grant. Your images together with two images provided by Mike Harlow today, and other images from various internet searches brings the total of 2015 or earlier images of Hind’s VN to 34. None of these show the narrow shadow supporting the suspicion. However I would still like to receive any more pre-2015 images of this nebula that others may be able to offer as it all helps the investigation.

    Richard
