Is there anybody reading this old enough to remember Miss Caroline Herschel appearing at the BAA WInchester Weekend in either 1981 or 1982? If so, you wouldn’t happen to have a photo to share would you? I thought the BAAJ Winchester report might have had one, but I checked my Journals and couldn’t find anything.
I would like to use a photo of her in a talk I’m giving to a local Womens Institute in three weeks time. Full credit to the provider of course.
It was a great thrill to meet her I have to say!

There was a pic on the front of the FAS May 1981 issue showing Patrick shaking hands with a young Deborah Herschel in Hampshire in April 1981 (HAG NAW event). It was taken by Pete Seiden. Not a Caroline, but a Deborah….That’s the only pic I can think of……I can email you a webcam pic and then scan it if you think it’s of use for your talk?

Many thanks Martin. It was Caroline I was after, simply because I met and spoke with her. However I can use your pic as a backup should I not be able to get one of Caroline.

There are a couple of other pictures of Caroline Herschel in the Journal as follows:-
1981 (91 4 p402) at the opening of the Herschel Museum.
1985 (95 5 p222) in her obituary by Patrick Moore.

Thanks David. I saw the one in 1981 when she opened up the museum, but it looked absolutely ancient so decided against it. I’ll check out the 1985 reference though. Martin M also came up trumps (no surprise there), so I have all I need now.

Gary, I’ve just seen a photo featuring Miss Caroline Herschel in the History of The Royal Astronomical Society Volume 2, 1920-1980, page 229:

I am a bit late on this one, but was looking into something else and I came upon Dick Chambers’ write-up of the 1982 Winchester week-end which confirms that was indeed the year when Miss Caroline Herschel was present and “who most charmingly agreed to say a few words to an appreciative audience”. JBAA, vol 93(1), page 31 (1982).
I can understand how it must have made quite an impression on you. Sadly I wasn’t there.
All the best,
