Those of you at the BAA Christmas Meeting yesterday would have seen some predictions for comets that may reach binocular and even naked eye range in 2017. The two best comets in the morning sky at the moment (C/2016 U1 NEOWISE and C/2015 V2 Johnson) are very different objects and I managed to get a nice comparison of them this morning which you can see here. The total magnitude of NEOWISE is brighter than Johnson but the latter is much easier to see. The Comet Section would be happy to receive observations of these two interesting objects.

Also, while I’m hear I’d like to let you know that the Comet Section will be holding a meeting in Northampton on Saturday, 2017 June 17 next year. If you are interested in comets please put this date in your diary.

    Nick,

I’ll come to your Comet meeting if you come to ours at Winchester 2017!  😉

Good meeting up yesterday.  Good meeting too, and thanks to Council for that.

Excellent – the date is in the diary and will keep it free.

As for Gary and Winchester 2017, unfortunately I shall be in Australia during late March / April so will miss the VSS knees-up. My apologies.

Of course I’ll come to your VSS meeting at Winchester as long as I can sit at the back…

Excellent Richard. Will you be willing to give a talk on your 29P work and outbursting comets in general?
