The highly-successful Gaia spacecraft will cease operations early next year. Throughout its working life Ground-Based Optical Tracking using large professional telescopes accurately monitored its position and motion.
During the decommissioning phase its apparent magnitude will brighten from 21 to about 15, and ESA are requesting amateur astronomers to submit photometry of Gaia taken using various filters, if available.
