India’s government has apparently approved plans to build a high-speed rail line through the site of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at Narayangaon, Maharashtra. It is to run as close as 1km to the 30 antennas (each 45 meters wide). The telescope focuses in particular on the 21-centimetre waves from neutral hydrogen and is used by around 35 countries to probe the dark universe before the first stars were born. Astronomers are concerned about the radio interference of the collected data.
