The dedication in Patrick Moore’s first non-fiction book, Guide to the Moon, is to an F Hadland Davis.
I’ve identified an F Hadland Davis was born in Devon, circa 1880, and wrote many books about Japan. A Peter Hadland Davis, born five years before Patrick in Somerset worked at an alpine nursery in East Grinstead in the late 1930s; Patrick at 14 in 1937 was reportedly running the Brockhurst Observatory in East Grinstead, on the Brockhurst Estate owned by Frederick Janson Hanbuy. Hanbury was a horticulturist…
So I am trying to work out the connection between Patrick and F Hadland Davis, possibly through Peter Hadland Davis who may well have been F Hadland Davis’ son.
I wonder if anyone has any clues or further ideas about this?
