I was appalled when I saw this http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-37896022 not only because of the waste of energy but also because if London is allowed to do it then other cities will follow in the name of art. I assume that representations have been made?

I agree with Owen. Lighting up the Thames will be an unnecessary tasteless waste of valuable resources. The columns of light in particular represent a horrific prospect. Commission for Dark Skies – prepare for action!

Just glad Birmingham doesn’t have a noteable river!  It’s shocking news.

The mind boggles Nick!  Seriously though we do have miles of canals here, so if it does catch on I can see the council lighting the many bridges over the canals in the city centre.  You can thank our President for that cheerful thought!

It might be worth talking with the RAS about this too. As Gary says if it starts then goodness knows where it will end as every tom dick and harry town will want its art installation and all the modern artists will be looking for commissions.

There was a piece on this on Radio 4 Front Row program on Monday.

Some fuzzy reassurances made concerning environmental impact. eg “we don’t want to dazzle the fishes”
