Dr Richard John McKimParticipantThe BAA has acquired about 15 bound volumes of Astronomy Now. It is an unbroken run from the start.
We also have a near complete bound set of the RAS Quarterly Journal (which was the forerunner of the modern RAS House magazine).
We also have some bound volumes of the RAS Monthly notices from the 1950s and 60s.The above can be yours for a token donation to the BAA.

Luigi SanninoParticipantDear Richard,
thank you very much for letting us know about these volumes.
The Istituto Culturale Astrofili Spezzini maintains the “Camille Flammarion” Library, a nationally registered astronomical library in Italy. As part of our work, we are also actively recovering and preserving historical astronomical books, journals and archival material, both for study and for future public access.
We would therefore be very interested in the bound volumes of Astronomy Now, the RAS Quarterly Journal, and the older bound volumes of Monthly Notices of the RAS.
If it were possible to arrange shipment to Italy, we would of course be happy to cover the shipping costs ourselves, in addition to making the symbolic donation to the BAA that you mentioned.
Please let me know whether this could be feasible and, if so, what the approximate number, weight or size of the parcels might be, so that we can evaluate the best shipping option.
Thank you again for thinking of a possible new home for this material. We would be very pleased to preserve it within our astronomical library.
With best wishes,8 October 2026 at 12:00 pm #643284
Dr Richard John McKimParticipantDear Luigi
I would happily give you the materials for free (and without any donation as you are abroad) but I cannot offer to package them and send them to Italy myself. It is too much extra work for me. I was expecting someone in the UK would want them and would collect them, but so far no one does, so they are yours.
Is there any friend or contact you have in the UK who could collect them from us and send them on to you?
The materials are located in our depository in Bedford. I go there occasionally as some of our archives are located there, so some advance arrangement would be needed. As an alternative I could bring the materials to my home near Corby, Northamptonshire, for collection.
We may possibly also have for disposal a long unbound run of The Observatory magazine, 1950-2002. It is complete. Does it interest you?
Please reply now to my private email below, rather than this Forum,

Dr Paul LeylandParticipantI have been on the road for several days and have only just seen this.
My collection of AN is fairly extensive but not complete, especially not the early ones.
I am also building up a substantial library, as Richard already knows.

Dr Richard John McKimParticipantHello Paul
I have not forgotten your interest in collecting publications. The AN set will go to Luigi. I need to know about The Observatory series. I know I had previously given you a long run, so I am presuming these can also go to Italy. Please reply privately to my home email as I don’t read the Forum very often.
Regards
Richard -
