Robin LeadbeaterParticipantUnfortunately I was clouded out in the days following the discovery by Ron Arbour of sn2016fnr on 29th August
https://wis-tns.weizmann.ac.il/object/2016fnr
and the type (Ia) had already been confirmed before I was able to take a spectrum last night.
My spectrum taken at ~ mag 16 using the modified ALPY “200” however confirms with high confidence the classification of a type Ia supernova near maximum light as assessed using the supernova identification program SNID.

The attached shows my spectrum (black) overlaid on the best fit spectrum from the SNID library

Andy WilsonKeymasterThat is a fabulous spectrum for such a faint target Robin. A shame you were clouded out but this is another demonstration of what you can achieve with your setup.

Robin LeadbeaterParticipantThis time it is the confirming spectrum.
at2016gfr was discovered by Tim Puckett’s amateur team 6 days ago but was embedded in the host galaxy and too faint at mag 17.6 for a spectrum.
When I checked on Saturday there was still no confirming spectrum but it had brightened to around mag 16 so I was able to extract a spectrum (confirming it as a type Ia) using the modified ALPY 200 despite a full moon. Andy WilsonKeymasterCongratulations Robin. A great achievement to take the confirmation spectrum for a mag 16 supernova!

David BoydParticipantHi Robin,
Nice work. The results you are getting with your modified Alpy will make an interesting topic for discussion at the spectroscopy workshop next month. It would be interesting to discuss with Shelyak whether they will consider making this modification an option for customers.
Cheers,
David
