Venus and the dark side
About this image
Those who follow the Venus and Mercury section will know that I have been experimenting with a tilting narrowband filter set to 1010 nm. Unfortunately the efficiency of this filter was so low that I could not capture the detail I was seeking. As a stopgap while I am awaiting another filter to use in combination with my 1000 nm long pass filter I decided to risk imaging Venus with just the long pass filter at the time and frame rates where I hoped to detect the dark side of Venus. I am happy to report that this was partially effective and I was able to capture some sign of the dark side. I don't think it has yet detected any heat detail on Venus as I suspect my markings are more likely caused by image noise as I need longer video stacks than I was able to manage on the 2nd. I have compared my combined images with the WinJUPOS heat map image of Venus for the relevant time.

Excellent work, Peter. Looking forward to seeing some thermal surface features on images in the coming weeks with your new Thorlabs filter that is coming.
Good luck,
Martin
