Tony RoddaParticipant
Hi Robin, See attached response from Northumberland County Council.
Paraphrased as, “yes, there’s a suspected health issue but it’s not as bad as all the others so we’re fine”. Strange.
My emailed reponse too. To which I got a very terse “go away” reply.
It’s on their watch. We know its on their watch. And now they know we know its on their watch.
So does Mr Guy Opperman, the Conservative MP for Hexham… and the local press.
So, “Wi aal knaa noo” as we say up here.
Tony RoddaParticipantYes, a Star Analyser seems to be the first step everyone takes. It mounts as an eyepiece filter would.
I don’t have one but….
I have a new 1″ Thorlabs 4* wedge prism (and mounting ring) that can be placed in front of the Star Analyser to improve resolution. The Star Analyser variant usually retails at £46 plus £8+ for the mount. I’ll probably ask half. I’m not sure that you need this until you have some experience with the ‘simple’ Star Analyser first.
I haven’t used this configuration but I’m sure other more experienced members can advise. Email/PM if you need to chat.

Tony RoddaParticipantQuite a lengthy explanation (attached) summarised as:
Probably a ‘weak’ link between LED Light at Night (LAN) and health issues.
Quite a lot of ‘distraction’ in the reply using night-shift work and other blue sources to deflect LED street light scrutiny. (And because there’s some truth in that assertion it lends a certain credibility to the stance that LED is no worse or does not add significantly to the problem).
A reasonably good (it has to be said) assessment of the AMA reports but one that is used to cast doubt on the findings and thus allow them to be ignored.
I’ll ask for the ‘newer AMA report’ that they reference in their reply.
Tony RoddaParticipantNone. Worryingly so.
Two ‘holding’ letters dated two weeks apart saying “we’re looking into this”. Wouldn’t you think they’d have known and/or had a sock response ready?
Anyway, tired of waiting so I’ve sent the same bundle to my MP. Nothing so far but what would you expect at the moment.
Two weeks and then I’ll send to the local TV/Press.

Tony RoddaParticipantI’ve posted reference material from the AMA in the Spectroscopy forum.
Tony RoddaParticipantPlease observe the usual practices if used.

Tony RoddaParticipantHi Robin, Are those not the same as Relco 480s? That’s what I’m using and their appear identical.

Tony RoddaParticipantHi Phil, what was the overall weight?
was it a shed like base?

Tony RoddaParticipantThanks Robin.

Tony RoddaParticipantThanks Robin.

Tony RoddaParticipantI think will build to a major hoohah.
Tony RoddaParticipantHi Andrew, Single doublet as per LowSpec to start with but the holder can be a max of 40mm long so a pair is doable. I also have several mounted pairs that I need to try but that’s a bit down line.
The material is PETG (with carbon fibre for ‘production prints) which looks good in practice.
The FoV will be LowSpec range initially, so quite limited.

Tony RoddaParticipantHalf a dozen mounted/unmounted, round and square…
Any good?
Tony RoddaParticipantI have a few fibre bundles, pinhole mirrors, splitters, laser lenses and mounts etc I bought from Ken Harrison a while back.
“Have 3D printer will print”.
If I can find a design (?) I’ll have a go.

Tony RoddaParticipantI contacted Dr Mario Motta and received all the reports, etc he referenced at the BAA meeting.
I asked for them because when I returned from the Warwick sessions and asked Northumberland County Council what they’d deployed (under a Freedom of Information Request) they said “5700K for streets and 4000K for the (Dark Skies) National Park”.
I have four 5700K lights each within 25 yards of my house. Whilst there is less scatter than the old sodium lights, these are the worst offenders for suppressing melatonin and disruption of the Circadian rhythm. There is real concern from the National Park management.
I’m preparing a briefing from the five papers received from Dr Motta to send to the NCC, the local NHS and National Trust. And, if necessary, the local news programmes.
If anyone wants the reports please contact me.

Tony RoddaParticipantNorthumberland County Council…
5700K streetlights (of which four ring my house each within 25 yards).
4000K for the National Park (and Dark Skies Park). Genius.
Tony RoddaParticipantI’m not surprised the roll-off design is so popular. Incredibly adaptable.
So far my “many small wheels” design has held up although I’ll probably go with larger wheels as you suggest when a refit becomes necessary.
The lightweight covering has held up after a dozen storms and it’s still completely dry. I think I’ll put another layer over the top before winter just in case. An entire covering only weights a couple of pounds.
The only issue has been with a slight sag of an inch or so, in the actual roof front due to the natural ‘give’ in the timber. Once the roof rolls off there’s minimal support at that point. I have a 2.5m 2″ x 2″ angle iron lintel which should cure it buts its minor.

T
Tony RoddaParticipantI’ve had an excellent response from the Northumberland National Park’s Visitor Development and Marketing Manager, who’d received assurances from NCC that harmful LED lights would not be used. At that time 4000K was thought to be OK for wildlife locations and that’s why a concession was made for the National Park. (We now know its not and the target should be 3000K).
Which begs the question “If they knew 5700K is unsuitable in some way for natural environments, why has it been installed across all NCC residential areas?”.
