Asteroid charts on the Computing Section’s site now cover all oppositions brighter than magnitude 12 up to 2012 Feb 29. The last entry is 433 Eros which will be only 0.18 AU from us at the beginning of February. It is well placed for UK observers now (Dec 13) at magnitude 10.1 in Leo Minor.

Graham, thanks for the note, it prompted me to explore the Computing Section’s webpages which is something I’ve never really done before. It’s becoming a really useful resource. If anything it seems a shame that the charts and applets are ‘buried away’ where they are. To my mind they merit a separate home page link, say ‘Observing Tools’.David.

Eros has now crossed into Leo. I managed to photograph its trail last night (the first clear night in weeks here). Result can be seen on Flickr: 433 Eros trail

433 Eros is heading south in Sextans, so catch it while you can. It will not have a better opposition for many decades to come.I imaged it on 19 Jan 2012. See my image at
