I am very sorry to have to bring the very sad news that Owen Brazell died in a car accident on Monday morning (16th), on his way to a star party.
He was a very active observer and full of astronomical knowledge. He served on the Council of the BAA as well as other section posts.
I have known him personally for over 35 years and will miss his sarcastic humour.
To avoid having two topics on this I have deleted my post which I posted simultaneously (almost) with Bob.
My post read:
“Members will be sad to hear that Owen Brazell died in an RTA on Monday morning (16th March), just a few miles from his home, on his way to the Kelling Heath Spring Star Party.
Owen was the UK’s leading Deep-sky visual observer, and will be sorely missed.”
I first met Owen at the BAA Winchester weekend. Sometime in the early 80’s we had a vigourous disagreement about a Supernova we were both observing from a partially dark location at King Alfreds college. After that we got on pretty well, and I (mostly) enjoyed his acidic wit! I didn’t see him that often, but when I did I enjoyed our chats.
