Very interesting. There is also the SPHERE instrument which is mounted on the VLT.

Remarkable instruments, and, I suppose as an opto mechanical engineer myself I am highly biased but it demostrates clearly that whilst theoreticians may theorise, engineers make it happen! 😉

Impressive stuff but my money for the “big one” (detecting life tracers in earth-like exoplanets in the goldilocks zone) is still on transit measurements rather than direct imaging eg

This is astonishing technology, and thanks for the links. Even as a recent member of the BAA I’ve noticed what appears to be an explosion of spectroscopy in the amateur community, so things move on. I wonder if I’ll live long enough to see the appearance of the BAA exoplanet imaging section – I’ll bet some members will.
