Fans of the 1930s & ’40s stage and screen comedian (and BAA member) Will Hay may want to watch or record The Big Blockade which is being broadcast on ‘More 4’ from 11.55 am to 1.25 pm this Wednesday lunchtime August 27. More 4 is on Freeview Channel 14 or Sky 138. This is a wartime propaganda film, not a comedy as such, and Hay plays a Royal Navy Captain. There’s a wikipedia page on the film at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_Blockade and there’s even a clip on youtube which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaxAo-Y_hEI The film was released in 1942 and Hay suffered very poor health in the following years. He is within a year of his final film work in 1942. Admittedly there’s lots of Will Hay footage on DVDs and youtube these days, but its rare for any to be on TV…..usually Oh Mr Porter! is shown every few years and that’s all there is. Will Hay is only one of many big names in this film, but I’ve not seen it shown on TV before.
Thanks for the tip. As a big Will Hay fan I’ll be recording it (although I have seen it).
We had a Will Hay night at the Heart of England AS last year – DVD’s shown on big screen, with the support act being several episodes of Shaun the Sheep. Astronomy can be fun in many ways, especially at the HoEAS! The room was full too 🙂
