    Thanks Grant,

I’ve managed to find a met office site that has cloud date over 25Km square grid pattern.  I’ll register with the site and see what they have.

    Thanks Grant,

Cloud coverage tables would be useful.  An area I had looked at is the South West cost peninsular of Pembrokeshire- Dale through to Tenby, but it’s surprising how much of an effect the lights of Pembroke power station and the gas terminals of Milford Haven light up the sky.  I was born there and can recall from early childhood a fair bit of rain, but there  are stretches that have their own micro climate.

I have also been considering the south west.

Until recently I had thought of Spain or Italy, but with the advent of Brexit, that’s a non-starter.

I’ve not even had a mediocre night at my present location for a couple of months.

    Denis,

that’s a useful link.  I’m in the process of building a 4.2m x 3.6m roll of roof so getting suitable wheels and track  will be necessary.

Accessories to large gates seem to be one way to go.  Besides wheels and track electric gates also supply  electric motors and teethed track that allow electrification.  Some builders have also used  up and over garage doors electric motors and track.

Those wishing  track angled or otherwise may like to consider metal stockbrokers.  They have very long lengths and various shapes and sizes cut to length and deliver.  They are much cheaper that off the shelf DIY

    Martin,

thank you, clarifies that matter for me.

This is going to be a trial run for a 20-22″ F:5.5 Newtonian, Surrier Truss mounted on a Paramount ME for CCD deep sky imaging.

The link given took me to the publication which had had been written in either the German or English language.  I take it then that there is not a fully English version.  Unfortunately, I can get by in Italian, but not German.

The more pro-am type publications the better and I wish you success.

    James,

I can help you out there.  During my time at Hertfordshire University they skipped the whole southern sky survey plates as taking up too much room and it was all digitized anyway.  I managed to retrieve some from the skip  and could let you have one or two.

I can’t get it to work with windows 10, though I have tried the various fixes propo

Hopefully any new versions will not need fixes. I expect it’s me and my limited computer skills.

Whilst on an OU summer school at Stirling Uni one summer during the 80’s I did notice it whilst walking past on a day out.

Nice to know that all these years later I was correct in what I thought it was. 🙂

    Hi Nik,

I have a 2.7m Pulsar dome, that sits   on top of a wooden building.

I found I got heavy dew on the dome and more worryingly, surface water on the metal work of the paramount gem. I also keep a desktop in  a large plastic box.  I keep the PC powered on and have installed a small DE-humidifier that runs  24/7 during the damp season.

I have had no problems during the past four years.

    Hi Bill,

I’ve been following this thread with a great deal of interest.  i is something I’d very much like to get involved with and I’ve been looking at setting up my own station using a Watec 910 HX /RC mono camera (that I could also use for asteroid/star occultation events as and when)

I’d like a little more guidance on camera lenses and  diffraction gratings and how to source them and mount them in relation to the camera lens.  Maybe you could drop me an email.

It would be nice to have regular publication that either lifted the level of “expertise/difficulty” or included more sophisticated  articles. The level of a great deal  of much  amateur work  is on a par with some of the lesser funded, smaller university projects.

I have subscribed to a number of monthly popular astronomy magazines and find that I skim read through them once and rarely return for further reading.    I’ve stopped taking Sky and Telescope recently and should have done so some years ago.

Thanks for all comments and suggestions .  I think I will settle for Calum’s suggestion of using Baader Optical Wonder Cleaning Fluid and see how I get on with that having first removed loose dust etc with canned air.

    Thank you for your replies.

Martin. Yes I have seen those short films which have been helpful  I will use the much of the technique described but I’m too afraid to try Ron’s method.

Neil. I’m not removing the corrector plate, just doing the outside and tilting the tube slightly.

Callum.  I have heard the Baader cleaning fluid mentioned to me in the recent past.  I may take a look at that.

Richard, thanks .Yes it’s de-ionised water I have and I will filter it and mix as a solution with isoropyl alcohol .

Re the washing up liquid this is usually quoted and advice is not to use the waxy ones.  Would fairy liquid do?

I’ll use pure kleenex tissues and get the cotton wool from a pharmacist

Thanks to all for your comments.

About painting the moon black.  It virtually has been.  it reflects about as much light as a lump of coal of the same size and same distence1

Ahh yes of course.  Just a thought that came to me  without thinking it through.
