ParticipantUnless I have got hold of the wrong end of the stick surely the threat is unchanged. The majority of the planets have been there for a long time but its just that we are discovering more of them.

ParticipantHi Gordon, Glad to be of help. You don’t need to do your own estimate as HOPS does it for you – 0.149 as on your light curve. Measuring the total depth of the light curve will give you an incorrect (too large which is what you have) a result as something called limb darkening has to be taken into account. See https://britastro.org/sites/default/files/Infinite%20Worlds%20Issue%209.pdf for an explanation of this.

ParticipantHi Gordon,
I had a similar problems when I tried to use the examples and found some did not give good results. Could I suggest;
a) You try another example
b) Obvious i know but do make sure you have got the correct target start by checking at https://www.exoclock.space/database/planets. Clicking on the target in the list will give you the field of view. HAT-P-32b might be a good example as it has quite a large transit depth

ParticipantThe right stuff!!!!

ParticipantHi Steve,
I think the attached image fits the bill as it shows several Solar System objects plus another (extra) Solar System!!!.

ParticipantHi Martin,
William knows far more about HOPS/Python than I ever will so I am sure his advice will provide the answer to your problem.

ParticipantThanks David. Looks very interesting but I might need another few weeks lock-down to get through it!!!

ParticipantHi Mark,
Would it be possible to view this at another time or record it?

ParticipantThanks Andrew – will give it a try.

ParticipantHi Robin,
Thanks for your comments. When I put the target list together I selected bright host stars with exoplanets that exhibited large transit dips – ideal for those new to this aspect of astronomy. What I didn’t do. and perhaps should have, was check whether or not these were multi-planet systems. I have since come across several papers discussing possible ‘missing’ exoplanets using the Titius-Bode law to calculate orbits. Using this data and your suggestions ref planet size and transit depth I should be able to come up with a target list. Will also see what the Stargazers Lounge are planning.

ParticipantHi David,
Thanks for the info – seemed a little complicated for this non-html person. What i did was to save the table I had created in Word as a pdf and upload that – look OK.

ParticipantThanks for that Robin. Too jet-lagged to make the BAA mtg but will take a look at the paper you mention.

ParticipantThanks for all your interest. My thoughts stemmed from reading ‘An astrobiology strategy for the search for life in the universe’ http:/nap.edu/25252. Mark’s ideas are most likely to bear fruit so that is probably the best way to go. Still think the money will move from exoplanet discovery to the search for life elsewhere in the not too distant future as far as the pros are concerned. So when us old guys are up there amongst the stars the young guns will be getting all the glory that goes with discoveries. Enthusiasm trumps scepticism every time!!!
