This year the Christmas Meeting is being held at the new Institute of Physics building in London and this has given us the opportunity to livestream the event. To watch the meeting live go to the IoP homepage here and, shortly before the meeting starts you should see a link which which will take you to the stream (there won’t be anything there until just before the meeting starts). This is the first time that we have ever done this and only the second time that the IoP have used this facility at their new building so please be patient if there are any technical gremlins.
For those that can’t watch live we hope to have a recording online fairly soon afterwards.
For those of you unable to get tickets or unable to make the journey to London I hope you find this facility useful. Very many thanks to the IoP for making this possible.
6 December 2018 at 7:15 pm #580337Roger DymockParticipantHow about doing the same for the Winchester Weekend for those of us who missed the cut?
6 December 2018 at 7:39 pm #580338Nick JamesParticipantWell, I suppose if we moved it from Winchester to the IoP building in Kings Cross that would work…
6 December 2018 at 9:32 pm #580339Grant PrivettParticipantThanks for the headsup.
7 December 2018 at 12:52 pm #580340Dominic FordKeymasterRoger Dymock: The main technical difficulty with creating live streams of meetings is that we need a very reliable and fast internet connection at the meeting venue. A dodgy Wifi connection isn’t good enough: it needs to be a rock solid wired connection.
Surprisingly few venues offer this. The internet in Burlington House is not great, and when we enquired about live streaming the Christmas meeting at UCL a couple of years ago, even that was a no go. I very much doubt Sparsholt College would be able to help us, unless they already do live streaming themselves.
In my opinion, doing this badly is probably worse than not doing it at all. If we offer a live stream, and then it keeps breaking up and isn’t actually watchable, we’re sure to annoy lots of people. So, on balance, I think it’s best to focus efforts on what we know we can achieve, which is high-quality videos of meetings after the event.

8 December 2018 at 2:36 pm #5803478 December 2018 at 2:51 pm #580348Mike DuviauParticipantThanks for putting up the youtube link Lars, its a good way for us to see the Christmas Meeting.
8 December 2018 at 4:06 pm #580350Lars LindhardParticipantThe quality of the stream is very fine and prof. Zarnecki’s lecture was very interesting.
Here are some pictures. Some of the gentlemen did not get all details, I’m afraid…
8 December 2018 at 4:10 pm #580351DawsonParticipantExcellent.
Great to be able to see the talks from home.
Might be useful if the slideshow of images playing at present were to have some text saying “we are having our coffee break, the video feed will return at about 16:15” or the like.
Great stuff.

8 December 2018 at 5:10 pm #580353Jeremy ShearsParticipantglad the videolink is working.
8 December 2018 at 6:02 pm #580355Lyn SmithParticipantThank you Lars for posting that link to the live stream. I was struggling to find the link until you kindly posted it.
I note that 30 of us were watching live and must say that the link was excellent and I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to everyone. A particular thanks to Nick James whose Sky Notes are always very informative and well presented.
Merry Xmas and particularly a very Happy New Year when it arrives.
8 December 2018 at 6:19 pm #580356Andrew GrantParticipantThanks very much for arranging the live-streaming. I very much enjoyed the afternoon of lectures.
Cheers,
Andrew.
8 December 2018 at 6:21 pm #580349Martin ColeParticipantGreat! Thanks to all involved in doing this, brilliant to be able to watch from my sofa in real time…it all worked very well. Could you add a facility to take part in the raffle remotely, perfect then..
8 December 2018 at 8:08 pm #580357William ScutcherParticipantThank you to everyone involved. Great talks and the streaming worked very well.
Two comments:
On my laptop the sound was rather quiet. This was solved by connecting amplified speakers. The sound quality was excellent.
The video quality on my machine defaulted to a rather poor quality Auto 144p. It was excellent when I changed it to 1080p.
Not as good as being there but a good next best thing.
Thanks again.
Best regards
8 December 2018 at 8:14 pm #580358David SwanParticipantThanks to all the speakers and the technical people who put the material online – and of course the organisers too. David Swan
8 December 2018 at 8:44 pm #580359Robin LeadbeaterParticipantI cast it to my TV and wound up the volume. It was almost like sitting at the back of the theatre. Thanks to all who made this work
8 December 2018 at 9:46 pm #580360DawsonParticipantExcellent.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Best of both worlds; I got to hear the talks and stay away from the stinking capital. Well done all involved; I too watched on you tube. I think it worked well for 3 hours or so; I’m not sure I would have sat and listened to a full day. I especially enjoyed the SkyNotes, a very entertaining and informative edition; just far too much on variable stars 😉
