Steve CuthbertParticipant
+1 for the Pulsar dome. Never had a problem with damp but my laptop is never left in the dome and my NEQ6 seems happy enough sat there. I do keep my ccd`s covered when not in use though.
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantHi Kate
Not quite sure whats going on there. I think the star not being fully on the slit would just reduce the intensiity I don`t think it would cause any line shifting, maybe someone else could chip in ?.
cheers
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantHi Kate
I did try a ring of led`s thinking that would be ok but instead got some weird lines which seemed to make things worse??.
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantGreat work Robin, shows a very good match on most if not all the stars you tried. Gives you confidence to use the Miles library with Isis.
cheers
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantHi Robin
Bit weird really as I looked back on some old flats I did using a different halogen torch but with the same white cover and they looked just like yours so I guess the light source is the fault!. I’m just sussing out a new Halogen setup.
Cheers
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantHi Robin
Yes that is the master flat and I`ve just tried the others and they are all similar. The torch I thought was Halogen turns out to be a Xenon bulb would that account for the spectrum?. So the second spectrum taken with a ring of led`s giving a similar spectrum, does that imply that led`s are not an ideal light source for flats?.
regards
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantGood point Andy the second flat with the led adaptor was taken in a closed dome during daylight hours which was really dark but the first flat was taken under dark skies. That bright line in the flat peaks around 3700 angst, not saturated about 18000 adu.

Steve CuthbertParticipantHi Tony
`Pitfalls` seems to be a new hobby for me as well as `b$lls ups` all part of the fun(?) 😉
cheers
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantJust realised what I`m supposed to be doing now (call it a grey moment!).
Take a reference spectrum of an A or B star which is then divided by an equivalent library spectrum to give a response curve which is then used as the response for the target spectra, yes its coming back now ;-))
Sorry
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantHi Robin
I was trying to follow step by step like we did at the workshop, take a spectrum of a target star and use a similar class of star in the ISIS library for the response. Must admit I do get confused when to take a reference star`s spectrum and when a library one.
I do remember now to use an A or B type for response, my bad !!. Those spectra above are simply the result of using an A9III Miles library star for the response which is obviously incorrect, Think that RMS got the better of me 😉
thanks for that!
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantNice clear image that Tony, haven`t tried that software. Sometimes I can`t always make out the slit with some software I`ve been using with my Lodestar but one I`ve been having success with lately is Audela the French freebie scope/ccd software although I haven`t quite got the guiding sussed out yet. This is a grab from last night.
cheers
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantCheers for that David, it seems with focal reducers its not an exact science especially if you start adding extension rings and such like plus I don`t use the calibration module!!. Any luck with that Nikon Capture NXI software yet?
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantGood catch Robin, will make a for a nice discussion at the weekend 😉
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantHi Tony
I don`t know if you have tried Astro Photo Tool (APT) which was primarily meant for dslr`s but now has ccd option. I have it running twice on screen to show 1- my Atik 314 with the Alpy and 2- My Lodestar with the guide module. Apt has a Histogram option with the Lodestar live view and can stretch the intensity to show the slit under fairly dark conditions and can auto lock the intensity so the slit is always visible. It also has a `single pixel` intensity option so you can tell if over exposed or not. I`m currently having luck with the French control software `Audela` too!
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantNice result Robin. You attending the Alpy spectro meeting next month?
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantHi David
Sounds an interesting and useful workshop. Is it possible to attend the workshops only please as I would stay with family nearby for the weekend ?.
thanks
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantExcellent work Andy. Might give Chi Cyg a try with my Alpy & 120mm Espirit but mag 13 might be pushing it a bit 😉

Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantNice clear spectrum as usual from David. Thanks for posting Gary I’ll have a try at that next time out!
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipant, but the tradition is that they are not, and that Council buiness is confidential.
Which begs the question “what could be discussed at meetings that the members should not hear about?”
Regards
Steve
Steve CuthbertParticipantHi Anthony
I echo what Andy, David and Robin say about Isis especially when using an Alpy spectroscope because you can use a Relco starter bulb (easily available from Amazon!) for calibrating spectra and is practically automatic!. Bit of a learning curve to start with but well worth sticking with it.

Steve
