    Hi Andrew

That is an amazing and generous gesture and one I’m sure the BAA will welcome with open arms!. The weather in my neck of the woods has also stopped spectro for some time now which is a shame as we are having dark friendly street lights installed in the area!.

    Hi Andy

Nice first nights spectra!. I realise these are complex instruments but with a new expensive instrument I would balk at having to “ tilt the whole mirror assembly forward slightly which was effected using a washer on the top screw “!. Just my twopennuth .

    Hi guys

Reading Kevin’s post and replies with much interest I‘m struck by the problems he seems to be having and judging by the replies it seems acceptable and perhaps the norm that these are to be expected. My reasoning being that given the price of the LHires it seems reasonable to expect it practically to work ‘out of the box’ or have I just got my Alpy 600 head on ;-))

Thanks for the videos Nick. Excellent talk by Robin, explained the difference between the different supernovae spectra and made it much clearer! Now to watch William’s talk.

    Hi Jack

You could just do a screen grab!. Get the spectrum on screen then press prt scn button (some keyboards show it as print or scn ) this copies a grab of the screen which if you then open an app like Microsoft Paint then press ctrl and v together this will show the grab you took which you can then save as a JPEG which will be a lot less than 2mb.

Very impressive Paul, any chance of putting together a quick (?) `how to` for us lesser mortals 😉

Thanks for the detailed install instructions Andrew, managed to install IRAF no probs but trying to find some sort of GUI for it…… I gave up after losing the will of trying to install MYRaf a supposidly easy (?) gui for IRAF. No idea why they make these things so long winded and complex. Back to trying the command line approach.

    cheers

I sent them to the BAA spectro one and also asked Francois where to send the AG Dra and CH Cyg ones to.

Think I’ve finally cracked PHD now for longer exposures, always thought it the work of the devil before  ;-).

Thanks Andrew. Does the amount of H alpha tell us anything different to say H beta or H gamma for instance?. I suppose we are delving into complex physics here!. I remember many years ago doing an OU course (Matter in the Universe) involving the C N O cycles within stars but H alpha didn`t seem to be discussed?.

    Hi Nick

I did use Maxim a while back and don’t remember having any problems using my Atik 314l. Stretching the grey matter somewhat I seem to remember downloading some driver for Maxim from the Atik web site maybe have a look on their site. Have a look here Maxim plugin half way down! http://www.atik-cameras.com/downloads/

    Hi David

Thanks for that, reassuring it was the right star. You think it best to choose a reference star from the Miles database or choose an A or B type near to the target star?.
