I watched the livestreaming of this meeting. Congrats to the organisers and speakers for their excellent presentations. Some constructive comments:

The sound quality continues to mar the live online experience. (The remastered recordings available shortly afterwards are usually much better).

The room microphone(s) clearly pick up the conversations as attendees are gathering – mind your Ps and Qs! – but as Janice demonstrated, unless a presenter stands/stoops very close to the (directional?) microphones on the dais the sound level is low – even with the strong voices of Nick, Jeremy and Tim, and with my laptop speaker set to high volume. The sound quality is often variable and distorted, resembling the ‘faulty microphone act’ of 1970s comedian Norman Collier (remember him?). It was better during Tim’s Sky Notes presentation.

The best live audio in the room was from the handheld microphone used during speakers’ questions. Loud and clear compared with the dais mics.

I’ll enjoy watching the remastered recording.

    Alex.

Thanks for the feedback, Alex (literary rather than audio!). Sorry to hear about the poor sound.
Interesting that Tim was easier to hear. He raised the dais just before his talk. Unbeknownst to the rest of us, there is a button to raise and lower the dais). I suspect that brought the mics closer to him.
We need to check in future whether the dais mics themselves can be turned up.

    Hi Jeremy,

There was a YouTube comment from someone else saying it was difficult to hear the first talks so they gave up watching.

I look forward to seeing the IoP’s Wurlitzer theatre organ rising from beneath the dais, bedecked with microphones to suit the heights of all speakers… 🙂

    Cheers,

    Alex.

It is a shame that the audio in the livestream is so ropey. The audio in the room seemed perfectly OK so I wonder if the stream was using a different microphone. It is not often that you can’t hear me!

The sound quality was dreadful. as it usually is. You’d think the IoP would be the last place that can’t get a microphone to work!

Hi All, I also watched the live stream and experienced the intermittent sound quality as the speakers moved closer and further way from the fixed microphone. Is it not possible have a secondary microphone atached to the speakers jacket lapel. This would be in additon to the fixed microphone. This arrangement is common when speaking at Local AS meeting etc. The BAA has used a jacket microphone at other meeeings to ensure good sound quality.

PS Despite the sound problems I was able to get the main jist of what the speakers were saying it was just that some of the detail was lost, and that is the shame. I enjoyed the streamed meeiting and appreciate being able to watch especially as I live in Highland Scotland.

The talks on Wednesday were really excellent and I’ve watched the recordings a couple of times, in addition to watching them live.
As Alex says the best live audio was from the handheld microphone, even during the Live Stream. For example Mike Maunder’s comments starting at 1h
59m 56s on the youtube video are crystal clear. A look at the video shows the microphone was at least a foot from Mike’s mouth yet the audio is excellent.
Like Alex there were times during the meeting that I too recalled Norman Collier’s hilarious comedy act, making fun of the dodgy microphones in the era of working men’s clubs….

A clip of his act can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uA2aAFjQqL4

If anyone has difficulty understanding what was being said at the June 3rd meeting of the ‘Norman Collier Appreciation Society’ I suggest clicking on Subtitles (at lower right).

It does quite a good job of on-the-fly subtitling – and under the YouTube recording details there’s a Transcript – Show transcript option.

The enhanced audio versions of last weeks meeting talks are now available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@britishastronomical/videos

Some of the Q&A answers are still a bit sketchy.

    Thanks,
    Callum
