Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipant
Deja vu .There is a thread here in ‘ Discussion’ from 2018 cf the first screening of that program that can be accessed.
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantThe Natural History Museum may hold some information in this compendium https://www.nhm.ac.uk/our-science/data/metcat/ .Looks like a printed edition plus CDs.
This too could be of use
Special Publication (No. 256) (The History of Meteoritics and Key Meteorite Collections: Fireballs, Falls and Finds)by G. J. H. McCall, A. J Bowden, et al. | 1 May 2006Neither of these are in my book mountain ,Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantPicked up this report from ITV of the ‘fireball’ event probably/possibly connected with the ‘boom’. Here is the link for the report https://www.itv.com/news/channel/2021-03-20/watch-meteor-sighted-over-jersey
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantA Google search with these parameters ‘pic du midi ciel et espace by rail and coaches’ will give you plenty of information to get you started. Sadly (with another UK Yorkshire astronomer) we missed out on addition to IOTA-ES occultation conference in Spain that took in a visit to the Observatoire. Too long a trip by road for us at the time. Hope your trip comes off.
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantThanks for that link Robin. There is more on Julian Wessels astro ballooning here https://jwastronomy.com/Stratos . Pi and IMX camera (as commented by Bill Ward) sounds better to a tight Yorkshire lad than committing a Sony Alpha 7 to a flight .
4 November 2019 at 8:39 pm in reply to: Photo album from the BAA’s 1900 eclipse expedtion to North Carolina #581554Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantThe North Carolina eclipse video is available on You Tube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4jfPfMKBgU
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantHi Tracey. Re NLC structure classification you could make a start via this link https://britastro.org/node/9456 .
This PDF is also a help http://www.iaga-aiga.org/data/uploads/pdf/guides/onc.pdf
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantHistorically I had a Minolta Slide Scanner (using SCSI board) and further to that an Epson flat bed scanner bought after research for 6×6 cm scanning, Moving on from ‘history’ you should consider the use of something like an Ohnar Slide Duplicator with your DSLR. The duplicators should still be around as S/H items or you could go to SRB (UK company that makes one of these ) at just short of £60). They reccomend the use of the 18 to 55 mm lens on the DSLR used for the job.SRB make adapters for lots of photo kit.
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantFor those travelling by car there is a Park and Ride bus service set up by the City Council. Here is a link https://www.itravelyork.info/park-and-ride .Hope this is useful.
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantHi Nick. Three West Yorkshire Yorkies coming so far (people not choc bars). This is just a query re lunch. Presumably there is no buffet facility on site and the one hour lunch gap does not allow time for a ‘pie and pint’ . It may be worth an ‘advisory’ to bring a light packed lunch in the event notes ?
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantClouded out till nearly 4 am. Quick through window check and then out on to the drive with the camera just as it clouded back over. A second view ca 5.15 am with nice colour then back to cloud again after a couple of minutes. The cloudy sky was noticeably much darker than when a bright full moon is about.I always had a feeling that full moons came with clear skies. At least I saw for a few minutes two bits of the event (but no piccies).Fellow tykes north of me had some success with images.
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantWorked well here in the Yorkshire borderland and much appreciated bit of astronomy as the wind and rain battered the house windows. Please repeat for some of the major meets if it can be done as efficiently/smoothly.
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantThanks for posting the YouTube link Bill. Plenty to view there from his early life onwards, I must follow up on the books on radar and H2S.My local library had Lovell’s ‘Meteor Astronomy’ on it’s shelves back in the late fifties (last century).
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantCan I suggest contacting the Catalan group amateur astronomy group in Sabadell near Barcelona http://astrosabadell.org/es/ . They have a dark sky out station at Montsec http://astrosabadell.org/es/activitats/camps-d-observacio . The link should access a site there with more run off replicate sheds than you can shake a stick at. It is worth getting in touch to find the source for all that woodwork . Hope this helps.
Maybe try this link http://astrosabadell.org/es/la-entidad/observatoris-montsec
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantHi Tony, Don’t know how far your net investigations have gone but there are some good ADSABS links from the Wikipedia entry for Skalnate Pleso Atlas of the Heavens. Follow those through and see where it takes you. Apparently Sky Publishing Corp (Sky & Tel) took on publishing it in the mid fifties of last century.
A search for Antonin Becvar will get you to some more info with a piece by Lubor Kresak. If you go on to the Cloudy Nights Forum and do a search for Skalnate Pleso Atlas using the forum’s search facility there is more information. Do the broad full forum search rather than narrow yourself down to the specialist forum group.
My second (1957) observed N/E comet Mrkos was discovered at Skalnate Pleso so is a special place for me. Missed out on a market stall purchase of the atlas in Accrington back in the 1990s ( going for a song too).Managed a great astro holiday in the region with visits to Lomniki Stit , Skalnate Pleso and an occultation symposium at Stara Lesna Observatory back in the late nineties. Rafted down the Dunajek river on the same trip.
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantThere is a post on the Ice in Space forum by Merlin66 (Ken Harrison an astronomical spectroscopist ) here http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=155019 re B(e) stars that will identify something that may help. Hope it is of use.
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantSadly the contact for Border AS identified on www,Astrospeakers.org , David Pettit, passed away in late January 2017
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantThanks Peter for posting. Looking around on the net I turned up further geneology research on John Field here http://www.g4fas.net/JohnField.html .Hope you find it of interest
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantThere is a discussion and images here http://www.orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?t=36047 on proton beams aurora (plus images) . Need to sort out my library (book stacks) for Neil Bone’s and Akosofu’s auroral books, There should be something in those .Hope this links help a bit.
Mr Leonard EntwisleParticipantThere is a calculator on the BAA Computing Section site here http://britastro.org/computing/applets_dt.html
