Hilarious, but not their usual headline of something smashing into the earths orbit as it hurtles past, bigger than the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs! Bigger than Big Ben is another favourite of theirs, which is the bell!

I wonder if the historical section has them?

In South Wales the local councils have installed LED street lighting plus with the mania for ‘security lighting’ we have a similar problem.

I stayed in Tivoli just outside Rome 6 years ago, couldn’t see a single star when it got dark and the sky glow from Rome 41 km away was quite spectacular

The last night I logged any variable star observations was 27th November, rest have been clouded out, twice in December I got my equipment out only to have the clouds roll in just as I was about to start. Four nights at the beginning of December  was cancelled due to muscle problems in my arm due to Flu and Covid jabs. Rest of the year was roughly 1 in 3 nights usable or just about even if only 1 observation was made but the beginning of the year was clouded out. Haze through the summer caused problems.

Overall observing conditions compared to 2020 seemed worse.

Seems V1405 Cas has been detected in X-rays according to the link below.

Whatever people think of him, he has certainly shaken up the space industry. There’s an interesting book; Liftoff, Elon Musk and the desperate early days that launched Space X by Eric Berger. which apparently got Elon’s blessing even though he does get a bit of criticism, for instance expecting 18 hour days 6 days a week for his top people. Quite an insight into how he got where he is and the seemingly high staff turnover of his designers/engineers.

I for one would love to see a paper on it in the JBAA

Interesting paper and it’s good to see the BAA acknowledged, looks like it will keep the professionals busy for a while.

I agree with Grant, where I live in south wales we have awful LED lights and the glow from Cardiff, Newport and Bristol. I’ve taken an interest in variables and upload to the VSS database, it’s a case of making the best use of the conditions with the equipment available.

I enjoyed the you tube video stream and look forward to the next one. Well done to all who made this possible, I hope this will continue for future meetings

Bit faint for my scope and the sky conditions, last night was clear up to 8:30 when high clouds rolled in and with the moon no chance of doing any VS work. Managed to observe V1405 and TX Psc just before 8pm.

I had hoped to see if I could see it visually but no chance as we had thin high cloud and total cloud by 9:30 last night and with our favourite source of light pollution, the Moon) in the sky for the next week or so I doubt if I would see it visually before it fades.

Hopefully with the American Astronomical Association in charge of it they will get it back to where it once was, Pity Sue French left her Deep Sky Wonders column as that was very interesting, her book of the same name is an interesting reference source.

I’ve not seen one in WH Smith in Newport (where I work but live in a valley outside of it), since my wife imported me here 5 years ago. Also they don’t seem to stock the other American magazine Astronomy either?

Seems in the UK S&T is off the newsstands?
